How Often Should Air Conditioning Be Serviced in Adelaide?

Learn how often Adelaide homeowners should service ducted and split system air conditioners, why timing matters, and the signs a service is overdue.

Most Adelaide homeowners should have their air conditioner professionally serviced at least once a year. Systems that work hard, run in dusty conditions, serve large homes, or are used for both heating and cooling may need more frequent attention.

The best time to service an air conditioner is before peak demand — usually spring before summer cooling, or autumn if the system is heavily used for winter heating. Waiting until the first heatwave is when everyone else discovers their system has a problem.

General servicing guide

  • Ducted reverse-cycle systems:: At least once a year, with extra attention before summer if the system is heavily used.
  • Wall split systems:: At least once a year for normal home use; more often for high-use rooms or dusty environments.
  • Evaporative cooling:: Service before the cooling season, including pads, water distribution, drains and general operation.
  • Older systems:: More frequent checks may be worthwhile because parts, airflow and electrical components are more likely to show wear.

Why annual servicing matters

Regular servicing helps protect comfort, reliability and running costs. A dirty or poorly maintained system has to work harder to move air and hold temperature. That can mean higher electricity use, more noise, weaker performance and a greater chance of breakdown when Adelaide weather is at its worst.

Servicing also gives a technician the chance to spot early signs of failure before they become emergency repair work.

Signs your air conditioner is overdue for a service

  • Weak airflow:: Rooms take longer to heat or cool than they used to.
  • Higher power bills:: The system may be working harder than necessary.
  • New noises or smells:: These can point to mechanical, drainage, electrical or hygiene issues.
  • Uneven temperatures:: Poor airflow, zoning issues or dirty components may be involved.
  • Water leaks:: Drainage problems should be checked quickly.
  • Frequent faults:: Repeated resets or callouts usually mean the system needs proper diagnosis.

What does a service include?

A professional service can include filter checks, coil inspection, drain checks, airflow checks, electrical inspection, thermostat/control checks, outdoor unit inspection and performance testing. The exact checklist depends on the system type.

Homeowners can clean accessible filters as recommended, but professional servicing is still important because many issues are not visible from the return grille or wall unit.

Does servicing help with warranty?

Many systems and warranty arrangements expect reasonable maintenance. If the system is neglected, warranty conversations can become harder. Servicing records also help show that the equipment has been looked after.

AFA Air's Lifetime Warranty offer for eligible ducted systems is backed by AirShepherd monitoring, but the system still needs proper care and connection. Learn more about AirShepherd monitoring and our Lifetime Warranty.
